Neighbourhood / Victim Support
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Community support groups are one of the most effective ways we have of helping ensure people and their property remain safe. Experience shows that crime reduces in areas where Neighbourhood Support Groups are operating.
The term “Community Support” includes the Neighbourhood Watch, Neighbourhood Support, and Rural Support network schemes. The idea behind these support groups is that people living in the same area band together to form a network whereby they can help each other in emergencies. These community support networks have worked well for many people all over the country. They don't necessarily involve a lot of work, just a caring attitude, and the benefits are real.
The Police have lots of information on community support groups and can help you set one up. They can also provide you with a Community Support street sign, stickers, keep you up to date on crime prevention tips with a regular newsletter, and offer other ideas. You can get this information from your local Police station or community constable.
WHY ME?...
Why me? can be the plaintive cry of an innocent victim, or a question asked by people who don't think they need to know about safety and crime prevention.
This book is about how you can reduce the chance of being a victim. It is also about how you can help to prevent crime in your community, and make your house and family safe.
BEING A VICTIM
Being a victim of crime can at times leave people traumatised and unable to cope. If you are a victim you may be surprised by the depths of your reaction. Victims often don't anticipate how deeply affected they will be. Common reactions of victims include:
SHOCK, HELPLESSNESS, FEAR, INSECURITY, GUILT, ANGER, DEPRESSION, IRRITABILITY, DAZE, LONELINESS, TEARFULNESS, DISTRUST, WORRY, GRIEF... etc, etc
