MONDAY APRIL 15, 2002: No leads yet
Police tell the media "There has been nothing that leads police to finding the baby, the offender or the car."
MONDAY APRIL 15, 2002: Kahurautere Durie was snatched from her pram as her mother Donna Hall was pushing her along St Albans Grove just before midday on Saturday the 13th of April, 2002. Ms Hall was walking with Kahuratere’s young cousins and their dog.
The offender’s description: a Caucasian man in his late 30s or early 40s, approximately 178 centimetres tall of slim build. He was driving a late-model two-tone silver and blue Mitsubishi car, registration UL 3802 or similar.
A targeted abduction has not been ruled out yet, as the baby has high profile parents.
Her father is Justice Eddie Durie who was sworn in as a High Court Judge in Wellington in 1998 and is the chairman of the Waitangi Tribunal. Donna Hall, the baby’s mother, is a prominent Maori rights lawyer and advocate.
She is currently leading the biggest Treaty of Waitangi claim for the Volcanic Interior Plateau in the central North Island.
Ms Hall, asked through news media, that anyone with information on the abduction to contact police 0800 150 499. She issued this police statement: "Baby K is an innocent little girl; she can’t speak, walk or even crawl. She needs regular feeding and to be kept warm. Please, just wrap her up warmly and deliver her to somewhere there are people and she will be quickly found"
Detective Inspector Stuart Wildon says the response from the public has been tremendous, but it is taking detectives some time to work through all the information with more than 100 calls logged so far on the 0800 150 499 hotline. He says there has been nothing that leads police to finding the baby, the offender or the car.
A police team numbering 50 officers was out until 10pm knocking on the doors of more than 100 homes in the immediate area of the kidnapping and continued the exercise into the week.
