27 April 2003 - Trial Begins
Trail begins against John Arthur Burrett and nephew Matthew Norman Payne
Both of the accused have denied charges of conspiring to kidnapping to detain and to hold for ransom, Wellington businessman “Mr X”. They are also denying charges having illegal procession of a firearm on 22 July 2002. The driver of the vehicle also arrested at the same time, Simon Jonathan Phillpot is not part of this trail.
Burrett who is defending himself in the trail is still adamant that it was all extreme game playing and has admitted to building the bunker. The bunker was unveiled to the jury on 30 April 2003 and sits at the front of the Wellington High Court. It has been pointed out that although on discovery of the bunker, it and the contents were dry, when heavy rain occurred it was waterlogged and if the victim had been there at that time, it would have been very dangerous to his health.
