Background to the case
Trevor Heath was reported missing on the 12th of April 1999, after failing to return from a trip to the Wairarapa. The victim had borrowed a mate's car and had not been seen since.
The car, a 1991 Nissan Maxima, Licence Plate RC 9142, was later found at the Wellington Airport on the 13th May 1999 and there was damage to the front and along the sides.
According to witnesses, Trevor was wearing a distinctive "Starter" brand jacket which was black with red stripes in the sleeves and "Nebraska Huskers" printed on the back, when last seen. He had on Norsewear socks with Slazenger shoes and dark blue cotton track pants.
A lot of hunters and trampers involved in outdoor activities use the Tararua Ranges and Mount Holdsworth areas. Police are actively pursuing this line of inquiry in the hopes that someone may have seen Trevor Heath around this area. Powell Hut was burnt to the ground on the 17th May 1999.
Police have searched the area and a police caravan was put at the entrance to Mount Holdsworth in hopes of speaking to all trampers who may have been in the area around the time of Heath's murder. A SKS Siminov semi-automatic rifle and a brand new green folding spade was found under Heath's body. Police are asking for any information regarding these items.
It is believed that Trevor Heath was active in the Wellington nightlife scene and frequented clubs. There is no corroborating evidence that he was involved with drug dealing as reported by various news media. The circumstances leading to his death remain a mystery and his family is still seeking the truth.
