Vicky Calder - The Defence
Defence Counsel, Judith Ablett-Kerr, is described in No Verdict as having ‘lent the trial a force seldom seen in a New Zealand courtroom’. It reports that she ‘stunned many Crown witnesses (with her) aggressive cross-examination.’ She also displayed an impressive scientific knowledge and was able to discredit much of the scientific testimony.
The defence’s position was that Calder was innocent. Although she was vengeful and had done some stupid things, this did not make her a poisoner. Why would she have used a readily traceable poison (as claimed by the Crown) and that if she had attempted to murder Lloyd, would she not have been intelligent enough to have got rid of evidence such as cut up clothing and angry letters?
