Structured Decision-Making
Information kindly provided by the New Zealand Parole Board
The Board has adopted Structured Decision-Making (SDM) as its primary decision-making aid when it is required to make a decision that relates to an offender.
SDM is a three-step process that enables the Board, on the basis of information provided by the Department of Corrections and other parties, to:- establish and confirm a baseline assessment of an offender’s risk, at conviction, of re-offending if released
- determine whether a change in an offender’s risk of re-offending has taken place as a result of the offender’s detention and/or rehabilitation while in detention
and, if the Board considers the risk is reduced sufficient to warrant considering the offender for release,
- to determine whether the release proposal presented by the Department supports the further rehabilitation of the offender and his or her successful reintegration into the community.
Following the completion of this process, and taking into consideration any other matters that the Board may determine are relevant, the Board will make its decision in relation to the offender.

As well as receiving submissions, the Parole Board is given information when considering an inmate’s case. |
