10 July 2002 - Plywood bunker uncovered, 'Operation Mist' launched
'Operation Mist' launched after members of the public stumbled across a bunker in the Rimutaka Forest Park
While enjoying the Rimutaka Forest Park, north of Upper Hutt, members of the public uncovered a plywood bunker. Measuring 2m long, 1m high and little more then a metre wide, reports say that it contained food, wine and a welcome note.
A tube supplied air to the inside of the structure, but the rest of it was well covered with earth and foliage.
The police were tipped off and immediately lunched “Operation Mist” with a 50 strong team headed by Detective Inspector Norm Cook. Law enforcement agencies from Australia, United States of America and Britain were also contacted during the investigation.
