22 July 2002 - kidnapping plot foiled
Police and serious crime investigators foil kidnapping plot in the lower Kelburn Area of Wellington. Three arrests were made and a sawn-off shotgun was recovered.
At approximately 7.30pm on Monday 22nd July 2002 armed police and serious crime investigators foiled an alleged kidnapping plot in the lower Kelburn Area, Wellington. The suspects were arrested in the Botanic Gardens, before making any contact with the intended victim, a prominent middle aged businessman.

Distraction devices rung out in the Glenmore Street area of Kelburn, although no actual gun shots were fired by the police or the arrested men.

One of the men, 52 year old, barrister John Arthur Burnett was forced to the ground and received injuries from a police dog. Two other men were also arrested at the scene, A 21-year-old unemployed man and a 34-year-old builder. Search warrants were executed on properties in the Upper Hutt area.
